02 May Stresspert Hack: Is Your Skin Care Safe?
While technology can cause stress, there are times it helps reduce stress and improve our quality of life. This #Stressperthack is all about a website and app that will help you figure out if what you put on your biggest organ, YOUR SKIN, is safe!
As the mother of a 2 year old and wife of a cancer survivor, I spend hours reading labels, articles, and blogs about what is safe or not safe. While the rule of thumb used to be “organic” was good and “non organic” was bad, major corporate buy outs have shown us some of our beloved brands, such as Tom’s of Maine, now include toxins. Staying on top of the industry is time consuming and stressful! However, my life changed when I attended a wellness training and learned about the app Skin Deep. Skin Deep was the brain child of EWG, the cosmetic database. Now, there is an easy way to see if what you are using to clean your skin, is really “clean”.
As stated on their site, “It is the mission of Environmental Working Group to use the power of information to protect human health and the environment.” EWG’s Skin Deep database gives you practical solutions to protect yourself and your family from everyday exposures to chemicals.” This site is amazing and the app is brilliant. Plus, they give tips and recommendations.
How It Works: First, download the app from their website. Then you can scan a product’s bar code and see if there are any harmful chemicals hiding in the ingredients. All products are on a rating system: 0-2 is low, 3-6 is moderate and 7-10 is High. You can also type a brand in and see if anything comes up about the product.
PRO’S- It is really hard to keep up with what has harmful chemicals in products and they do the work for you. Plus, they are raising awareness that your skin is the biggest organ and what you put on it matters.
CON’S- While the site is constantly updated, you might not always find the bar code of what you scan. However, don’t let this discourage you. You can add new products to their data base so they can do future research.
OTHER GREAT OPTIONS: Think Dirty is another great app that has similar services and is a little more on trend with makeup suggestions. Also, the book and website; “No More Dirty Looks” was a go to for me 5 years ago when my husband was diagnosed with cancer. Some of their information is directed toward certain products they love, but over all, they have great content and suggestions on how to “clean up” your skin care routine:)
